Farmers & Communitities of Eastern Zimbabwe
We intend to engage, contract and capacity build, some 10 000 small holder farmers to commercially grow their own exotic eucalyptus trees on their pieces of adjoining lands. We want to include poor people in the forest value chain in order to combat climate change and poverty. We seek financial partners and potential carbon buyers to enable this.
The project will be implemented in 3 main consecutive phases as below:
1. Feasibility and Viability Studies
This phase will establish the legal basis and institutional framework for afforestation proprietorship by small scale landholders. Some work under this phase has already been done including a complete Project Design Document (PDD).
2. Pilot project
At least 2.78 million new trees will be planted on 2 500 Ha of land and brought under active management over 1- 2 years. At the end a comprehensive review will be done with a view to refocus, retool and refinance the projects.
3. Full scale, Rapid afforestation through out-growers
This will be the last phase of the project where there will be accelerated tree planting and tree growing. Under this phase at least 2 500 ha of tree will be planted annually for 11 years. At the end, the project will have planted at least 33.3 million trees and brought them under active and scientific management.
The project will mitigate climate change through lowering the amount of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It will diversify rural incomes, alleviate poverty and improve livelihoods as small holder farmers will earn carbon credits. The local environment will be protected from soil erosion and environmental degradation.
Carbon sequestation will increase from zero at start, to peak at 600 000 tonnes CO2 annually in year 13. This CO2 sequestration rate will be maintained for ever. Total project cost is US$ 41.5 million over 18 years
